Diabetes
This class
emphasizes education, exercise and monitoring to help people living with
diabetes lead a healthy life. They also learn what these levels mean in
terms of exercise and wellness. The fitness component of the class
consists of warm-up techniques, stretching and strengthening exercises
and cardiovascular exercise. Blood sugar, blood pressure and pulse are
monitored at each class. The dynamics of group exercise also offers
support for the person with this condition. The class is held twice
weekly.
Weight Loss Water
Aerobics
Working out in water
greatly reduces the amount of compression forces throughout a person’s
joints. This gives a person who is 30% or more over their ideal body
weight the ability to participate in a cardiovascular weight loss
program at a higher level than on land. There is also less chance for
injury when completing exercises in the water. The dynamics of group
exercise also offers support for the overweight participant. The class
is held twice weekly.
Prenatal Water
Aerobics
This class takes place in the aquatic therapy
pool. The water supports the
weight of the baby
making it easier to exercise while minimizing jarring or pressure. This
allows expectant mothers to participate in an aerobic workout with
reduced pressure throughout the abdomen and pelvic area. This class is
held twice weekly.
Senior Water Aerobics
The moderately
active older individual may benefit from this class. Group consists of
warm-up, aerobic exercise, stretching and cool down exercises in the
water. Participants may also exercise at their own pace if they prefer
to. The dynamics of group exercise also offers support for the
individual. The class is held twice weekly.
Chronic Pain
This aquatic class is designed to address pain
from a
variety of diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, chronic low
back pain or injury. Properties of the water such as warmth and
hydrostatic pressure can have great benefits for those with chronic
pain. Participants may also exercise at their own pace if they prefer
to. The dynamics of group exercise also offers support for the
individual with chronic pain conditions. The class is held twice weekly.
Ai
Chi
This
class offers simple
water exercise and relaxation techniques. It is conducted at shoulder
level depth in the pool. Ai Chi movements involve balance and trunk
rotational components and are practiced dynamically, repeating the
movement in rhythm with breathing. Ai Chi has been found to be helpful
for a variety of chronic conditions as well as for general overall
health and flexibility. This class is currently held once a week.
Osteoporosis
This class emphasizes
exercises on land,
education and motivation to help people with osteoporosis develop and
maintain healthy lifestyles. Emphasis is placed on weight bearing
exercises, strengthening exercises, posture and balance. The dynamics
of group exercise also offers support for the person with this
condition. The class is held twice weekly.
Fall
Prevention and Balance
Our Fall Prevention/Balance program is a land based exercise class. This
class is based on the Otago Balance Exercise program which can: help
reduce falls up to 35%, reduce the severity of an injury during falls,
and prevent functional decline in older adults. The class participants
are also introduced to other approaches and strategies for fall
prevention. The classes meet weekly.
Yoga
for Cancer Survivors
This
class incorporates yoga poses to gently stretch and strengthen the body
and relaxation techniques to calm the mind. Modifications to poses may
be made to address individual needs. The class is open to survivors of
any type of cancer at any point in their recovery process. No yoga
